One big site or many small sites?
General Marketing, SEO, Site Management July 19th, 2008Should you open one big site on many topics or open many small niche sites, each having a topic of it’s own? I personally prefer opening many sites (all optimized for their own unique set of keywords) as opposed to one site. The main reason being “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”.
Think about it…
You could start 5 to 10 blogs within the same niche. It is well worth the SEO benefits you’ll eventually reap. Develop them slowly over time … keep adding content (no rush as the domains will age in the process.)
Example: Exotic Cars, Hybrid Cars, Muscle Cars, Tuner Cars
Like, for me, if I were to start another blog, I might keep it in the webmaster niche. I could start a blog about making money on the internet. Eventually, I could have a network of webmaster blogs on topics like design, programming, web hosting, etc. I could interlink them all and not receive SE penalties for links to off-topic things.
(It’s also better for the users. When I visit a blog and read a great article on how to take care of my pet fish, I don’t want to go to another page hoping to find a relevant article, but end up at a post about setting up a website.)

It’s not always true to open more sites rather than one big site; like if you have one main domain (Yahoo, Google) etc. you may try dividing it into subdomains depending upon the niche. It may help in optimizing the use of resources, maintenance cost & back end programming efforts etc.
