Register your domain for a long time
Ideas, SEO June 26th, 2008Some people say that the “registering your domain for a long time will give you a high google rank” theory is BS… it’s only a thing that the domain registrars spread around in order for them to make more money.
So, if a Godaddy.com salesman wants you to register a domain for the next thousand years then yes, he’s lying to you. However, many people will make a point of registering a domain for at least 2 to 3 years at a time, as apposed to 1 year. This is for a similar purpose, as some people believe that Google takes your site ever so slightly more seriously… It is a bit similar to the need of having a dedicated IP address for your domain, which is also believed to give you the same sort of weight as far as Google is concerned.
I’ve just registered a domain 3-4 months ago for 10 years. I got it some links and one of my pages on the site is now ranking on the 2nd page of 72,100,000 results! So I guess that yes, registering your domain for more years will give you a point with Google, but I don’t think it will instantly boost your rankings. Remember, all the little things help.
