The Truth About NoFollow Links
Link exchanges, SEO, Site Management June 10th, 2008Ever since the nofollow attribute was introduced, people have argued inconclusively whether or not Google spiders nofollow links. Everybody has been running around like a dog chasing a racquetball trying to figure out whether or not these links hold any value.
Well ladies and gentlemen, after spending a little time performing a basic experiment; the short answer is YES they do pass authority.
So many gurus are running around telling people that nofollow links are useless. Well my friends, we have proved them WRONG. Not only did my test URL get indexed, it is also listed on the first page of Google. It took about four weeks before the site got indexed off of a mere 5-6 nofollow blog comments and a yahoo answers response.
Also, keep in mind that the keyword I used is the name of my domain and only had 237 other sites with the keyword in their title; in other words not a very competitive term. If you were trying the same thing with ‘Poker’, ‘Ringtones’ or another competitive niche you wouldn’t experience the same results with so few links.
You are probably wondering what the domain was?
http://www.janked.net <– This Link Is Nofollow to keep things in line.
Go ahead, search for janked, that’s right, we are on the first page.
As far as I’m concerned this is 100% conclusive evidence that nofollow links not only tell the engines to index your site, but they also pass some for of authoritative link juice.
What do you think of that fellow SEO gurus?

I find that it is an awesome trick to use if you do not want to get busted by google for having a site that revolves around an affiliate offer. I had an AdWords campaign shut down because my site was labelled as “spam”, I had too many affiliate links on page. Now, I just use the “nofollow” tag and I’m safe from being slapped for it.
Great article, very true.

Wow, everything I read everywhere said that nofollow links held no authority at all but after reading what you just read, it makes me think otherwise. Thanks for posting.

I agree nofollow links have helped us get in the google index

So what is the point of a nofollow link if it doesn’t even work then? Well I guess when I’m doing directory submissions I shouldn’t be put off by the free nofollow option!? Thanks again man, great site.

Dan: (I wrote the article as a guest poster)
Anyways, I believe the idea behind nofollow is to reduce the value of a link not completely discredit it.
So.. if you were to take 2 links from the same site and place the nofollow tag on one and dofollow on the other, you will probably receive more ‘link juice’ from the dofollow link, however the nofollow link still does hold value.

A good indication that Google does follow NoFollow links is that they are shown in the Google Webmaster Tools reports. But overlooking that - do you really think that when, say, a site like Wikipedia goes nofollow Google will stop counting its outbound links? It’s more reasonable to that after such a move Wiki’s links will be a BETTER indication for authority…

Google (well Matt in particular) state frequently that nofollow links can be used for discovery.
Your test is irrelevant however because among other factors, someone dugg the page 8 days ago thus providing juice.

Andy: Fortunately for the sake of this test, (whether you believe it or not matters not), this test was completed over two weeks ago. It just took me a while to get my lazy ass together to write it. Unfortunately for us, I showed a few colleagues and you are always going to have idiots out there who want to make you look bad and I’m assuming that is where the digg came from.

I also reviewed a webpage in a blog article mentioning its keywords. The page was, before the article, ranking second for those keywords. The link to this page was “nofollowed”, 2 days later the page moved to the first position. ( not very competitive keywords )
This confuses me because no other rankingfactor changed during this short time…
