Directories might be of interest to owners of new sites because its a free and easy way to get links. But if its so free and so good, why do so many people often shy away from this? There’s actually some valid reasons.

Posting links on forums is a good way to get visitors to your sites. You can not only get traffic that is extremely targeted, you can also build up back-links to help out your site in search engine rankings. The only problem with posting on forums is the amount of time that it occupies.

A lot of people with new sites have the problem of getting their site to appear on Google. There is a “Submit Your Site” page on the Google website, but it doesn’t promise to actually get your site listed. The ONLY sure-fire way to get indexed is to get other people to link to you.

Saw this question asked on a forum I visit frequently, so I thought I’d answer it here:
“Last night I stumbled a post on one of my new sites, have had less than 70 visitors ever to this site. After I stumbled it, my wife stumbled it. One hour later, stumble had sent me 80 visitors, and I had 4 new adsense clicks. In the morning I checked analytics, and I ended up having 300 or so visitors from stumble in about 2 hours, and then it suddenly stopped just before midnight. I’ve had 2-3 hits today from it, but nothing like that. Is this normal? I’ve used stumble for some average traffic, but that was pretty wild.”

The key with site updates are that they should cater to your users needs. If you own a news site, visitors want to see the latest headlines. And that might mean you need to update many times throughout the day. But what if you own a basic information site? Should you just add content for the sake of adding it? NO! Of course not. You should add things that people want, that will attract new people, make them bookmark, send to friends, etc. Remember: Quality over quantity.
