StumbleUpon traffic… good? bad? OK?
Viral Marketing April 8th, 2008Saw this question asked on a forum I visit frequently, so I thought I’d answer it here:
“Last night I stumbled a post on one of my new sites, have had less than 70 visitors ever to this site. After I stumbled it, my wife stumbled it. One hour later, stumble had sent me 80 visitors, and I had 4 new adsense clicks. In the morning I checked analytics, and I ended up having 300 or so visitors from stumble in about 2 hours, and then it suddenly stopped just before midnight. I’ve had 2-3 hits today from it, but nothing like that. Is this normal? I’ve used stumble for some average traffic, but that was pretty wild.”
To answer this guy’s question, I’ll say this: The thing with StumbleUpon is that you will get bursts of traffic bits at a time. Some people think of them like drinking a RedBull… you’ll feel great for a few hours but then its back to nothing. Personally, on this site, GettingMoreVisitors.com, our best day ever (traffic wise) was thanks in part to a StumbleUpon visitor “stumbling” upon our site. We got about 110 visitors in less than an hour. Since then, we haven’t gotten even close to that amount in a day.
The thing with quick success is that it can’t be relied on. Don’t think StumbleUpon as potentially being your number one source of visitors to your website… cause it won’t be and it can’t be relied upon. However, this does not mean that you should completely count them out. All pages on your site should have a link to “stumble this page.” (At the bottom of every post on this blog we have a StumbleUpon button) Who knows? You might get lucky one day like I did.

If we think about QUALITY of that traffic then it’s not good at all since most people leave soon and this doesn’t get you too many returning visitors. Still any traffic is ok since from those hundreds maybe SOME would become “addicted” to your content. Just like entrecard or other systems: the traffic per se is not wonderful, but the fact some people discover your site and come back, makes it worth the effort.

Yeah Ramona, I think if you were to monetize these pages that get stumbled, you would definitely need to do it with CPM ads… because there is no way the visitors will be clicking.
