Are link exchanges worth it?

A lot of new sites go crazy with the link exchange process.  They make like 50 new exchanges per day (or more) and think to themselves, “As long as I get link exchanges, there is no way I can fail”.  In actuality, sometimes link exchanges (especially quickly adding them) are bad for search engine rankings.  Here’s a few reasons why:

Get the first spot in Google

I found an interesting map of the click distribution on Google search results.  It appears that there is a 42.9% traffic difference between the site at #1 and the site at #2 as well as a considerable extra time spent at the number one site.

Increasing impressions per unique visitor

The longer visitors stay on your site, the more likely they are to find something interesting and tell their friends. They are also more likely to click on ads. In addition, many advertising companies pay per page view (called CPM), so you might get some extra money just by having them view some more pages. But, how exactly do you get them to stay on your site?  Let’s look at some possibilities:

Split your content into multiple pages
The most common way to do this is (if you have a blog) on your blogs main page, only put a paragraph or two of the new article and then a “Click here to continue reading” link at the bottom.  Also, if you have a picture gallery, consider splitting it up and putting one image on each page instead of every picture on the same page.  There are many ways to do this, just get creative.

Importance of having good content

Building up a large amount of links to your site is a hard task. It takes hours of work searching for sites, seeing if they are worth linking to, adding their link, emailing them, waiting for their reply, removing their link if they refuse… that process repeated 100X can get quite tiresome and old. You can easily find yourself putting in hundreds of hours of work, and it’s not even a sure thing!
