Forum traffic is good traffic
Ideas March 26th, 2008One of the best forms of free advertising is a forum signature. However, some people do not understand how much traffic a forum could actually lead to their site.
This method of advertising is not only free but also very easy to implement and get off the ground. All it really takes is a couple of minutes to write a response to someones thread.
The key is to getting traffic is to write on forums that are related to the type of site you are promoting. If you offer beneficial and useful information in your response it is likely that people will “trust” you enough to visit the site in your signature.
Once you finally get a high post count, you can start creating your own threads. This is where you will get the most traffic as your link will be more towards the top of the page. This is where people will really start visiting your site and taking some action. The more helpful your thread is, the more traffic you should expect.
This is a very simple idea that has helped many people in developing successful websites. Here are some quick tips about forum signatures:
- Make your signature stand out and look neat so people actually click it.
- Don’t make the link point directly to an affiliate offer or sponsor… this is spam and will clicking get you banned from the forum.
- Don’t expect to get any search engine benefit from these links. The PR transferred from forum links is so small that it’s unnoticeable. You should view forum promotion as a way of promoting that is different from search engines.
If you currently are not a member of any forums, just search Google for some that are related to your site and start posting! If you already participate in a forum, you might as well add links to your sites in your signature. I mean, why wouldn’t you? Why waste so much time participating in forums without getting something from it?

Great post. Forum signatures bring in about 1/3-1/2 of our total traffic to some of our sites. It’s usually pretty easy to bring about, just post on some high traffic forums with a high quality post, like you said. If you can catch a thread that is ongoing and has some longevity, you can become a regular poster and start seeing some serious traffic coming your way.
I agree, starting a thread is probably the best way to get traffic and what we’ve seen the most benefit from. However, like you said, it offers no search engine benefit, but may offer MORE traffic than search engines can offer you!
Forum traffic is often more predictable than search engines as well. Forums don’t change their rules (that often) and aren’t as fickle as search engines, so you can count on some traffic if you create a good post.
