I found a good blog post here. That guy gives a great list of some very creative ways to get links to your site and the best part is, 90% of the ideas are free. I already discussed his first idea, “Create viral linkbait” in my last article. As for his other ideas, here are three that especially jump out at me:

  • Answer a question on Yahoo Answers and reference your site - For those of you unfamiliar with Yahoo Answers, it is just a large database of questions people ask, and answers that other people give (in order to help). If you search the Yahoo Answers database for questions related to your site and answer them by linking back to your site, you will not only get a free link, you will get a free one-way related link and possibly some targeted visitors to your site as well. For an example of how this can be done, check out my reply to this question.
  • If you’re in school, put your link on your college website - Google recognizes .edu sites as being for reputable than your average .com, .net, or .org site. Because of this, links to your site coming from .edu sites are worth more. Most colleges or universities offer free web space to their students. Just log in and add a link there. It’s easy, free, and well worth it.
  • Comment on Do-Follow blogs (meaning the link in your comment will be followed by a spider) - This is another way of getting a free link without having to pay the price of putting a link back to their site. But how can you tell if the link won’t follow? It’s easy. Check the source code. If you want to see an example, go to this post on Shoemoney. Right click on the page and few the source… check out the comments section. You can see his source code clearly as non follow because his linking code looks like this: a href=’http://www.startblogging.net/start-a-blog/’ rel=’external nofollow‘. Use the same method to find blogs that don’t keep search engines from following your link.
