Domain names are not important
SEO March 10th, 2008Other than my recommendation here that you should try your best to get a “.com” domain name, I really don’t think that domain names are that important in terms of SEO. And no, I’m not just saying this because my domain is really long and I’m jealous of people with a shorter ones… I can back this up.
Take this highly searched keyword for example - “funny videos”
If you search for “funny videos” in google, the current number one result is a site called bofunk.com. This is certainly not a domain name that a professional search engine optimizer would recommend you buying if you were to start a funny videos site. It has zero keywords in the domain name and the name itself doesn’t even make sense. Yet somehow, it stays number one for the highly competitive keyword “funny videos.”
There a bunch of other examples like this one… carlocab.com is #1 for the keyword “make money online”, rottentomatoes.com is #1 for “movie reviews”, okcupid.com is #1 for “online dating”,
So instead of worrying about buying the perfect domain name, you should stick to the proven strategies: building up back-links and writing good content.
